The choir of the National Academic Great Opera Theatre of the Republic of Belarus has recently celebrated its 70^th anniversary, which reflected a long way of continuous striving towards high skill and renown. Now it is one of the best singing groups of the country.

A prominent contribution to the professional growth of the group was made by the People’s Artist of Belarus Alexey Kogadeev (1926-1997), under whose leadership the choir has remained from 1963 to 1993. Since 1993 the choir is headed by the Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus Nina Lomanovich.

Currently the choir has 70 members. A significant part of it is comprised of young professionals, most of whom are graduates of the vocal department of the Belarussian State Academy of Music.

The professional eminence of the group is an outcome of its remarkable performances of such operas as “Aida”, “Un Ballo in Maschera”, and “Il Trovatore” by G. Verdi, as well as “Carmen” by G. Bizet, “The Queen of Spades” by P. Tchaikovsky, and others. Among its best achievements are the so-called “choral” operas, such as “Prince Igor” by A. Borodin, “Nabucco” by G. Verdi, “Turandot” by G. Puccini, “Boris Godunov” and “Khovanshtshina” by M. Moussorgsky. The choir is also famous for its performances of “Requiem” by G. Verdi as well as that by V.A. Mozart.

The magnificent sound of the choir has been an indispensable ingredient of the success of the Belarussian Opera troupe on tours in Brazil, Germany, Israel, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and other countries. In Solothurn, Switzerland the choir was titled by the media as one of the “heroes” of the festival “Classic Open-air”.

The choir of the Belarussian Opera collaborates closely with the troupe of the National Ballet Theatre. It participates in the ballet productions of “Carmina Burana” by K. Orff, “Passions”  by A. Mdivani, and others, as well as accompanies the ballet troupe on tours abroad.
